What You’ll Need
- Square piece of paper (6x6 inches works well)
- Scissors (optional, if your paper isn't already square)
- Pens, markers, or crayons for decorating
Step-by-Step Instructions
Step 1: Fold in Half
- Start with your square piece of paper.
- Fold it in half diagonally, making a triangle. Crease well.
- Open it up and fold it in half diagonally the other way. Crease well. You should now have an 'X' crease.
Step 2: Fold Corners to the Center
- Lay the paper flat with the creases visible.
- Fold each corner of the square towards the center, so the tip of each corner meets in the middle.
- Crease each fold well. You should now have a smaller square.
Step 3: Flip and Repeat
- Flip the square over to the other side.
- Fold each corner towards the center again, just like you did on the first side.
- Crease each fold well. Now you'll have an even smaller square.
Step 4: Create the Pockets
- Fold the square in half, bringing one side to meet the other. Do not crease the entire fold; instead, gently pinch the center to create a soft crease.
- Open it up and fold it in half the other way, repeating the pinch.
Step 5: Insert Your Fingers
- You should see four little flaps or pockets on the top of your fortune teller.
- Insert your thumbs and index fingers into these pockets.
- Gently push the corners together to form the fortune teller shape.
Decorate Your Fortune Teller
Step 6: Write Numbers
- On the outside flaps, write the numbers 1 through 8. You can arrange them in any order you like.
Step 7: Write Fortunes
- Lift each numbered flap.
- Underneath each number, write a fortune or prediction. Get creative and have fun with it! Examples: "You will have a great day," "A surprise is coming your way," or "Good luck will find you soon."
Step 8: Add Colors (Optional)
- Color each of the outer triangles with different colors or patterns. This adds a fun visual element to your fortune teller.
How to Play
- Ask someone to pick a color.
- Open and close the fortune teller, spelling out the color one letter at a time.
- Next, have them pick a number.
- Open and close the fortune teller that many times.
- Have them pick another number.
- Lift the flap and reveal their fortune!
Tips for Success
- Use thin paper: Thicker paper can be hard to fold.
- Crease well: Sharp creases make the fortune teller easier to manipulate.
- Get creative: Personalize your fortune teller with unique fortunes, colors, and decorations.
Variations
- Themed Fortune Tellers: Create fortune tellers based on holidays, movies, or books.
- Question Fortune Tellers: Instead of fortunes, write questions under the flaps.
